Scoring 112 points in just 42 minutes’ play, Worth’s 1st VII roared to victory in the Sussex Under 18 sevens held at Christ’s Hospital.
Strong in both attack and defence, the 1st VII won 17-7 against John Fisher in the quarter final and swept aside St John’s Leatherhead, in the semi, before deafting Brighton College 29-12 in the final.
“We’ve had a wonderful season and taken some major scalps including Kings’ Canterbury, Eton and harrow,” said housematsre and 1st XV coach Glenn Robertson.
The squad included captain Max Barnett, who has played for London and the South east in the England trials, and county players James Powys-Lybbe, Max McAllister and Ben Green.
Worth’s 2nd VII also had a tremendous afternoon, with wins over Cranleigh, Hurtwood House, Brighton College and Reigate Grammar.
The Under 16 seven almost managed to emulate the success of the senior side in their county tournament. They won all their pool games and beat Eastbourne in the semi-final 33-19. The final was a close affair with the scores level 17-17 at full time but unfortunately they conceded a try to Hove Park in the first period of sudden death.
Worth’s Invitation sevens was well attended this year. The Worth 2nd VII won all matches in their competition and went on to win the plate. The 1st VII completed a clean sweep by winning the main competition after beating Eastbourne, Christ’s Hospital, and then St John’s in the final.
This was the first time the school has managed to win all the trophies in both tournaments in one year.
The following week the team reached the semi-finals of the Surrey Sevens but just missed out on a place in the final losing 24-10 to John Fisher. Convincing wins in all their group games at the Rosslyn Park National Sevens meant hopes were high for finals day. But the disappointment of the season was to come in the play-off games against St Peter’s York which was lost 24-17.
