Worth old boy James Heywood from Heathfield in East Sussex has gained his Blue. Blues are awarded to players in the annual varsity matches between Oxford and Cambridge. This year the varsity matches included a 4 day fixture at Fennes and a one day game at Lords. James kept wicket for Cambridge in both of these games.
James is the first Worth boy to gain a cricketing Blue. At the school he played in the1st XI for 3 years. He captained the side in his final year and was an outstanding wicket-keeper and batsman. He also represented Sussex Schools and played club cricket at Heathfield. Now in his second year at Cambridge, James has already represented the UCCE side, earlier this season playing in the historic victory against Northants.
His cricket coach at Worth, John Denman was thrilled to learn the news and said, “James was always a talented and ambitious player with an excellent approach to the game. I am not surprised that he has been successful at Cambridge and he thoroughly deserves the honour of playing at Lords. His achievment is a great boost for cricket at the school, and it comes at a time when the refurbishment of our ground has helped raise the profile or the game in this school.”
