Cricket Club Report - (Spring 2001)

A mixed 2000 season for the Old Boys, which got off to a disappointing start, probably best summarises our Summer last year. Our usual fixture list of five games was in place and there was much to look forward to only to find we had to call off the first game (Emeriti) in May due to the weather. In six seasons, only one has been unaffected by rain!

The second game of the season was against the school XI, who were restricted to 147 all out. WOBS bowled pretty well; James Holt picking up 3 for 14. However, our batting let us down and in the end the school ‘cruised’ to a victory by 39 runs.

Things could only get better and they did against Erstwhile Emus. Our relatively low score of 131 all out (J Gairdner 35 and P Pitt 27) proved to be enough as we bowled our opposition out for 120. Sam Smith picked up four wickets and James Holt, three.

Our game against Old Theonians has taken on a forty over format, in recent years and this year was no exception. WOBS were bowled out for 155 (J Gairdner 60 not out). Our bowling again came up trumps as we nailed the OT’s for 102 all out. James Anthony took 4 for 17 and Sam Smith 4 for 25.

The last game of the season was played against the Worth Occasionals who scored an impressive 204 for eight despite a good bowling performance from Richard Gairdner who took 6 for 65. 205 proved too big a target for WOBS who were ‘skittled’ for 137, Dominic Crossley producing the only performance of note (36).

And so the season came to an end. The scores were relatively low which probably reflected generally slow, green pitches and lush outfields but the spirits stayed high, even at the end of the last game when it felt more like winter than summer. Our results were perhaps a little disappointing but it was good to be able to turn out sides for each fixture with less difficulty than in some previous years – that in itself was something of a result!
