Worth, 23 July, 2006 - WOBSCC 168 all out lost to Worth Occasionals by 21 runs
Worth Old Boys’ shortcomings with the bat were the principal contributors to a lacklustre performance after a second-string attack had restricted John Denman’s Occasionals to 189-3.
Fielding no regular bowlers with the exception of James Anthony who performed creditably (12 overs, 1 for 21) on a pitch that offered little assistance, keeping the Occasional to under 200 was an admirable achievement and left WOBSCC with a more-than-gettable target.
It was a generous declaration aided in no small way by some erroneous time-keeping by one Angus Gairdner who sold the perfect dummy resulting in the Occasionals withdrawing to the pavilion 10 minutes or more ahead of schedule and denying them valuable time at the crease. It might have proved the most significant contribution of the day!
But Occasionals modest target proved too much for an inadequate display with the bat by WOBSCC. Wickets fell all too frequently and just as a partnership was starting to show promise, another adjustment to the casualties tally was needed.
Only one batsman passed 30 (Simon Jones - 35) while there were two contributions in the 20s from Nick Acworth and Piers Pitt (both guesting for WOBSCC).
The result was particularly disappointing for a team that reckoned to “bat down to number 11”.
Next week’s fixture against Emeriti will be a good opportunity to reverse a worrying trend in matches in the past year or two.
This fixture was the first of the season for WOBSCC after the first two games were cancelled.
