Recent Engagement Announcements.
Congratulations to Lucian Sumpter (StB'97) who is engaged to Joanne.
Congratulations to Andrew Cloud (B'00) who is engaged to Natalie Travers. They plan to marry in July 2008.
Charlie Sacarello's Memorial Day took place on Sunday 21st October 2007. Around 300 people attended Mass and the rugby (which was a closely contested match). The day was an unprecendented success and thank you to Rob Cottrell for organising the day and to everyone who attended.
The White Knights Ball in aid of The Order of Malta Volunteers took place on Saturday 5th January 2008 at the Grosvenor House Hotel, Park Lane, London. Some of you will remember Adam Fudakowski ( G'02) who is Chairman of The Order of Malta Volunteers.
VSA 2007. Congratulations to Luke MacWilliam (R'07) and Rob Carson (G'94) who successfully applied for Voluntary Services Awards in 2007. Luke will be woking at an Eco-Tourism Lodge in Kwa Madwala Game Reserve in South Africa and teaching school children in Malawi with Lake Malawi Teaching Volunteers in 2008. Rob ran a summer camp for disabled children in Ireland.
A DATE FOR THE DIARY - SUNDAY 21st OCTOBER AT WORTH - A MEMORIAL DAY FOR CHARLIE SACARELLO
As some of you may remember, 2007 marked the 10th anniversary of the death of Charlie Sacarello (B'97) - a great rugby player and friend who is sorely missed by friends and family and all wobs who knew him. WOBS marked this anniversary and celebrated Charlie's life with a Memorial Day at Worth, culminating in a rugby match against Stonyhurst Old Boys. This took place on Sunday 21st October - Charlie's birthday - when he would have been 29. A very successful event was organised by Rob Cottrell.
RIP Neil Cawley, 30/03/1957 - 06/09/2007, Butler '75. Neil lost his battle against cancer and died on Thursday 6th September. Please remember Neil, Serene, Robert, John and all their family in your prayers.
A memorial service was held held for Neil on Saturday 22nd September at 2.30pm at St Edwards The Confessor Catholic Church, Burchard Crescent, Shenley Church End, Milton Keynes, MK5 6DX.
James Abbott (C'93) would love to get back in contact with old contemporaries at Worth. He is working in Northumberland as a Chartered Surveyor and married Kath in 2003. Their first son, Tom, was born in December 2006. James's brother, Toby (C'95) is living and working in Bristol.

Congratulations to Louise and Dominic Bruning (StB'89) on the birth of their third child, Toby John who arrived at 10.50am on the 31st July. Mother and baby are doing very well and are safely at home.

The End of an Era. John Denman's retirement as a member of Staff from Worth School this summer was marked by WOBS Cricket Club with the presentation of a picture, with citation, on the day of the Club's annual fixture against the Worth Occasionals. John (pictured centre) accepted an invitation to become an honorary WOBS Cricket Club members and its first Club President. Rob Carson (G94) completed a sponsored bike ride in August to raise funds for the disabled holiday camp that he runs in Ireland specifically for disabled children from the Dublin area. The holiday camp offers the children a five day adventure holiday, enabling them to push their physical boundaries and better understand their abilities and possibilities.
Congratulations to Raimundo Morales (C97) who married Cecilia on the 26th May 2007. The happy couple are pictured below.
Congratulations to James Anthony (G97) who is engaged to Christina St Croix. They met while at Exeter University.
Congratulations to Chris Dobson (SB66) who successfully cycled the 320 miles from Greenwich to Paris. He and Alex Burge raised £8,000 between them for charity. Chris was raising money for Jubilee Action (a Christian-based international human rights charity), Nyumbani (an AIDS orphanage where his daughter Theo worked) and The Louise Dobson Charitable Trust. He would like to thank his many sponsors, supporters and family.

RIP Gareth Belcher 21/04/68 - 28/05/07, Butler '85 Gareth lost his battle against cancer and died on Monday 28th May. Please remember Gareth, Fred and Anne and their family in your prayers.

WOBS Golf. Moor Park Golf Club at Rickmansworth in Hertfordshire played host to the 10th Spring Meeting for the Rose Bowl Trophy. The event was very well supported and a successful competition took place on 25th April 2007.

Tom Bright awarded Sword of Honour Many congratulations to Thomas Bright who received the Sword of Honour on 13th April, 2007 at the 153rd Sovereign's Parade at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. General Sir John Reith KCB CBE, representing Her Majesty The Queen, was the reviewing Officer. Tom has been commissioned into the Royal Artillery (in which his brother-in-law serves as a Major). After leaving Worth Tom went to Bristol to study for a Electronic Engineering degree. Between university and Sandhurst he and a fellow officer cadet rowed across the Atlantic in 62 days!
Christopher Hull, RIP Christopher, who was a Worth prep school boy and father of wobs Caspar and Rupert, died suddenly on Monday 9th April, from a heart attack. Please remember Christopher and his family in your prayers.
Dobbo (Eddie) Robinson was awarded a silver medal in the Best Estate Agent of the Year 2007, South East region. Eddie runs an estate agency in Maidenhead, Berkshire and can be contacted on 01628 637 600.

St Benedict's Day Mass was celebrated at Corpus Christi, Maiden Lane, Covent Garden on Thursday 22nd March, with D Kevin presiding. New Leavers' Reunion was held at The Antelope, Eaton Terrace, Chelsea on 30th March. About 20 wobs attended, an encouraging number considering about 40 of the year of 2006 were abroad. WOBS plan to make this an annual event for recent Leavers.

Cas Fecher (10/06/85 - 27/10/06) RIP Sorry to have to post such a tragic notice but Cas (Gervase 2003) was found dead in his room at Keele University during Thursday night, 28th October. There has been a post mortem and a coroner's hearing is due in the next few days. It appears that Cas took his own life but had shown no sign of depression. His studies were going well, he was socially outgoing and an active member of the Students' Union. He was in regular contact with his family and had a good network of friends. Cas's death appears to have been unpremeditated and very sudden. His Requiem will be at Our Lady of England Priory, School Lane, Storrington, West Sussex RH20 4LN (map of location: http://www.norbertines.co.uk/map2.JPG), Thursday, 9th Nov. 1.00pm. Please keep Cas and his family and friends in your prayers at this very sad time.

Newly qualified doctors Jon and Ed, returned to Worth to speak to year 13 about their time away on their electives in China. WOBS gave them a VSA to help with living costs while in China.

Two WOBS VSAs each of £500 were awarded to Dominic Moor (S '00) and Michael Burr ('06) for voluntary work they will undertake in the next few months. Dominic is going to Uganda for his elective period during his fifth year of medical school. And Michael is going to Cambodia to work on a conservation project. Good luck to both of them.

Darren Khodoverdi (B'00) reading Medicine at Gonville & Caius College and team captain representing Cambridge has successfully led his team through to the 3rd round of University Challenge. Keep an eye out for them on Mondays at 8.30pm on BBC TWO.
WOB Parents win Oscar
Peter and Minnette Fudakowski parents of Adam (G'02) and producers of the film TSOTSI, won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film earlier this month. The film is set in a South African township and is the story of an African who steals a car then finds a baby in it. Minette Fudakowski adds "that I doubt if Peter and I would have been attracted to this difficult subject matter if we had'nt, through Adam, felt that we were bathed in the benevolence of the Benedictines. Having a son at Worth has been a very happy experience for us. TSOTSI will be out on general release the weekend of 17/18th March and Abbot Christopher is encouraging everyone to go and see it

Surrounded by friends, Joan Edey celebrated her 90th Birthday with a party which included some familiar faces. Joan retired as Worth's matron in 1976 after 40 years service to the school. She is now living in a retirement home in near East Grinstead.

Sunday 18th September - Old WOBS v New WOBS rugby match at Worth

The game was as fast and furious as always! with the young WOBS trying to run the oldies off the park. They produced some wonderful handling and mesmerising angles to score some breathtaking tries.The oldies benefited from the fitness sessions run in Battersea and a couple of players from Her Majestty's Armed Forces who could run all day!!

New Baby for Marie-Clare, Secretary WOBS To Simon (R'89) and Marie-Clare McMenemy the birth a beautiful baby girl. Elizabeth Sophie Fleur was born on 17th August weighing 7lbs 4oz, a sister for Charlie and Annabel, huge congratulations from all the Worth Old Boys.
Liz Blake RIP Many of you will remember Liz as Secretary of WOBS 1993 to 2000 and a sometime taxi driver to Worth boys during her long association with Worth School. I am sorry to have to let you know that Liz died on Saturday 6th August after a short illness caused by a brain tumour. Liz's great energy, sense of humour and zest for life will be sorely missed. Liz's funeral will be held at 2pm Friday 12th August at Worth Abbey. Please remember Liz in your prayers as well as Martin, Jo, David, Peter and her four grandchildren.

Ben Ford (B91) machete attack as reported in the papers over Easter week-end: "Ben Ford, 32, a british financier working in Hong Kong, lost two fingers and was horrifically cut by machete-wielding Triad gangsters who mistook him for their intended victim. Microsurgeoans spent 15 hours stitching Mr Ford's hand and fingers back together." Please remember Ben in your prayers.

News from Dave Carter "Katie was an incredibly brilliant young lady and gave birth to our gorgeous son (currently Benjamin Thomas Charles Carter) at 1.50am on 21st September. It all happened very quickly and with minimum fuss! He weighed in at a middle-heavy weight divisional 8lbs 4oz. All is going well and hopefully due home today [22nd Sept]....that's when the fun begins!

David Bell Knighted Founder member of Worth senior school, David Bell (Chapman '64), and nephew of Fr Maurice, was knighted for services to business, the arts and charity in London in the Queen's birthday honours list (12/06/04).

WOBS Golf Society news Worth came 2nd in the Russell Bowl (the Catholic public schools annual golfing event). Ampleforth came first - they have a fantastic team! However, Worth represented by James Blake, the Davey brothers, Peter Gottelier and Ken Ross came a noble second beating Stonyhurst and Downside!
2004 WOBS VSA Andrew Welsh was presented with a £500 WOBS Voluntary Services Award by Chairman of WOBS, Nick Butterworth on 7th June, 2004. Andrew, who becomes an Old Boy in July, is travelling to the Galapagos Islands in September, where he will spend 3 months teaching in primary and secondary schools on the islands.

2004 WOBS v School Tennis Match On Speech Day, 29th May, 2004, WOBS took on the school in a tennis match. The WOBS team of Andrew Boys (R '64), Chris McCourt (B '83), Crispin Hayhoe (S '82), William Pollen (S '94) and Sean Buckley (G '83) were keen to repeat the winning performance of last year's match. But it was not to be. The boys, who did not appear to have broken into a sweat by the end of the match, won all eight sets played. WOBs were left sweaty, dishevelled and beetroot-faced. Michael Clabburn (C '64), RIP. Michael died on 21st April, 2004, aged 57. Michael had suffered with motor neuron disease for many years. Please keep Michael's wife and three sons in your prayers.
Chris Coopman and Mic Cataldo - marathon survivors. Old Boys, Chris Coopman (R '02) and Mic Cataldo (S '97) successfully ran the London Marathon on Sunday 18th April, 2004. They both ran for Whizz Kidz (for details see 'activities' section); WOBS sponsored each of them £100. Well Done Chris and Mic!

Sol Burridge, RIP. Sol, the much loved spanish teacher at Worth, died after a short illness on Tuesday 13th April, 2004. Sol leaves husband Nicholas; children Old Boy Edward, his sisters Genevieve, Moira, Teresa; and nine grandchildren. Old boys are welcome to attend her funeral, which will be in the Abbey church at 11.30am Monday 26th April, 2004. Please remember Sol and her family in your prayers.
WOBS St Benedict's Day Mass There was a good turn-out for the mass celebrated by Fr Kevin on 18th March, 2004, at Corpus Christi, Covent Garden. The mass was offered for Old Boy, Michael Breen who died suddenly in January (18/03/51-17/01/04), RIP.
wob to wob Change of the Guard at Buckingham Palace On 14th March, 2004, the Duke of Gloucester and the Spanish Ambassador were present for a three minute silence held during the change of the guard at Buckingham Palace. The Captain of the old guard was Hugo Clarke (St Bedes '87) and the Captain of the new guard was Ben Hancock (Gervase '90).
