Three very important benchmarks have been reached in the path towards the introduction of girls to Worth School on Tuesday 2nd September 2008.
Building work for St Mary's House - the new girls' house - is well underway; a new Housemistress has been appointed; and all of the 32 places available to girls have been filled.
It was on the 26th November 2007 that the construction company arrived on site to commence refurbishment of the unused boarding accommodation in Austin House. This marked the first in a series of phases towards providing boarding and day facilities for a total of 80 students by 2010.
The first phase involves the refurbishment of the existing Austin House building, ready for occupation in September 2008. This will provide initial accommodation for boarding and day Sixth Form students, a common room, Housemistress' office and matron's room. Phase two will be a new extension on the west side of the building which will provide 16 new study bedrooms and a new main entrance. Phase three will be another new extension on the north; this will complete the plan and provide more study bedrooms, small dormitories and a flat for an assistant Housemistress.
Hot off the press is the announcement that Mrs Caroline Brown is to join Worth from St Leonard's Mayfield, where she was a Housemistress and teacher of Italian. She arrives at Worth on the 1st September 2008 as the new Housemistress for St Mary's House.
Yvonne Lorraine, Registrar at Worth is now turning her attention towards September 2009 when a further 25 places will be offered to Year 12 students. By 2010, there will be 80 girls throughout the school aged from 11 to 18 (Years 7 - 13), and a significant number of applications have already been received for both the Junior and Senior schools. Following a number of events specifically aimed at girls, the aim is for Worth to start 2010 with a full cohort of female students in Year's 7, 9, 12 and 13.
